Key & Lock Guide

Can a Car Key Be Made Without the Original?

Yes, in many cases a working key can be made even when you have nothing to copy. Here is how the process works and what we need from you.

Starting from scratch

When there is no key to duplicate, a locksmith reads the vehicle to generate a new key. For many makes this can be done at your car without a tow to the dealer.

Cutting the new key

The key blade is cut to match your vehicle's lock pattern, either by decoding the door lock or by using your vehicle identification number through proper channels.

Programming the chip

Most modern keys carry a transponder chip or are proximity fobs. The new key is programmed to your car so the engine recognizes it and starts.

What we need from you

  • Proof you are authorized to have a key made for the vehicle
  • The year, make, and model
  • Access to the vehicle where it is parked

Why a spare is worth it

Once you have one working key, adding a programmed spare is far simpler than starting from nothing. A spare keeps a single lost key from stranding you again.

Can you really make a key with no original?

For many makes and models, yes. We generate and program a new key even when none is available, as long as you are authorized for the vehicle.
